We have all stained our clothes at some time or the other. And, we’ve tried to remove it, albeit unsuccessfully. Stains, especially food stains, are very difficult to remove, if not dealt with immediately.
Some of the common food stains that we deal with on a daily basis are tea and coffee marks. What we need to do first is to wash the area immediately with warm water and a detergent. Vinegar is a good stain remover too. Add one teaspoon of vinegar to one quarter of cold water and dip the stained cloth in the water. Wash the loose particles of the stain and then wash with warm water.
Tomato sauce stains are one of the toughest stains to remove from clothes. It is best to remove these stains when fresh by wetting the area and adding some dishwashing detergent to it. A toothbrush can be used to scrub out the sauce remnants from the area. Wash the stain with warm water and then follow the general laundry process. Dry out the garment in the sun instead of a dryer, to remove the stain completely.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has updated a survey guide to protect workers from the risk of asbestos in workplaces. Long time exposure to asbestos has adverse effects on the lungs, causing breathing problems to the workers.
The new survey guide released by HSE replaces the old MDHS 100 guidance guide. It has a lot of information about the risk of asbestos and the subsequent precaution that needs to be taken and it is targeted specifically at builders and maintenance workers.
Until the year 1999, asbestos containing materials was widely used in constructing new and refurbished buildings. After 1999, it was banned. However, about 500,000 non-domestic buildings still have asbestos containing materials, which pose a risk to the public if they are damaged.
HSE’s ‘Asbestos: The Survey Guide’ helps clients to select a competent surveyor for their buildings and teaches them how to refurbish buildings that contain asbestos materials without damaging them. The guide also helps the clients to recognize materials that contain asbestos.
The new updated survey guide can be downloaded free at this link -http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/index-hsg-ref.htm

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently launched the second phase of its Shattered Lives campaign against inadequate safety features in North West companies. According to a recent survey conducted by HSE, tripping and slipping are the most common accidents that occur in the workplace, costing over £800 in damages.
About 1,751 falling and tripping incidents have been reported with critical injuries and over 3812 injuries where the workers had to take leave for more than three days. The survey also reported two deaths in Manchester, one in Ellesmere Port and Neston area. The sad fact is that these incidents could have been avoided if the companies had been careful about their safety protocol.
The new phase of the campaign aims to reduce tripping accidents in workplaces. Industries targeted for this campaign include health & social care, food manufacturing, food retail, catering, hospitality, building, plant maintenance and construction.
To increase awareness about the campaign, HSE has launched a new website called www.hse.gov.uk/shatteredlives, which offers online guide on practical safety measures and about how to work safely at heights.
To avoid any unnecessary health issues, Pool Fresh cleaners are unbeatable.

Unlike regular dusting and scrubbing, windows have to be washed carefully, especially if they are made of glass.
Professional window cleaners generally make a window cleaning solution by adding 6-7 drops of liquid dish washing solution in two gallons of water. Those who wish to do green cleaning can mix a cup of vinegar in quarter bucketful of water. Avoid too much soap; it leaves streaks on the glass windows.
After cleaning the windows with the vinegar or soap solution, wash the windows again. Wipe the surface and the corners of the glass pane gently with a paper towel.
Clean with a soft sponge, without too much scrubbing, lest they make scratches. The sides of the windows will have to be cleaned too, since dust gets accumulated there.
Use cleansing powder that has oxalic acid instead of vinegar to clean stubborn water streaks. Using cleansing powder could be tricky since the windows might get scratched. Test with a small amount of cleansing powder on a small portion of the window.

With ‘Green Cleaning’ fast catching up, housewives are queuing up to buy expensive eco-friendly products. Instead of investing on costly eco-friendly products, white vinegar can be used as an effective cleaning agent. Vinegar has mild acidic properties that works wonders on stains and kills bacteria and germs.
One common problem that every household faces is clogged drains in the kitchen sink, which emits a bad odour. A natural remedy for this problem would be to pour a cup of baking soda in the drain followed by a cup of distilled hot vinegar. Wait for five minutes and then flush the drain again with hot water.
An easy way to clean greasy ovens is to use distilled vinegar, which will help remove grease stains and splatters. Distilled vinegar can also be used to remove limescale deposits in a kettle. Add half a cup of distilled vinegar to the water in the kettle and leave it overnight. Pour out the water next morning and rinse with hot water.
Using products such as vinegar helps us to be eco-friendly without spending too much money.

A recent survey conducted by British Crime Survey (BCS) reveals alarming figures about the amount of violence and threats faced by British workers. During the year 2008-2009, there were over 305,000 threats and 321,000 violent attacks faced by the British workers.
According to 2006 Fit3 employee survey, over 16% of workers have been threatened with violence in the past three months. About 67% of these workers have been threatened more than once and 66% of them personally knew the individual who was threatening them.
Over 33% of such incidents go unreported and are not brought to the management’s notice. The most common reason for not informing about these incidents is that the worker in question wishes to deal with the situation on his own. Fourteen percent of the workers do not trust the management to provide any kind of aid. Twenty three percent of the workers revealed that there are no special mechanisms or processes laid down by the company to protect them from violence and threats.
The RIDDOR survey reported 6,160 injuries in 2008-09 which is slightly less than 6,315 injuries in 2007-08. Though it is difficult to predict a trend, recent surveys seem to reiterate the fact that companies should have some safety policy in place to protect the workers from such violence.

Loaded vehicles on the road are a very common scene, but it is quite risky to get close to any of them because over 1200 people are injured every year due to unsafe loading practices. Apart from injuries, goods that are worth millions of pounds are also damaged during such accidents.
Unsafe loading of goods leads to shifting of the goods within the vehicle and goods falling out of the vehicle on people. While transporting the goods, there is a likelihood of the goods shifting forward and falling on the road and injuring a vehicle that is coming behind. Another possibility is that when the goods roll, the transport vehicle can topple and roll, damaging the goods and injuring the driver and other vehicles.
Following simple load safety rules can help avoid these kinds of mishaps from happening. Before taking the vehicle out, the driver should ensure that all the goods are tied down firmly to the load bed. The goods must be contained securely, without any room for it to move around.
